A few days back when I was writing about 'brainstorming', my 7 years old nephew approached me and enquired about my engagement. I told him that 'I'm writing about brainstorming'. He wanted me to elaborate him the term. Being told that this term is used for the person or groups who are trying to find a creative solution to a particular problem, he told me that this term cannot be restricted to a certain group or person only. On being asked how, he stated that they also think of different ways not to be caught for their mischief, as giving the same reason time and again, cannot help them in the long run. So, to prank someone they keep finding ways that could help them entice their friends.
Although, his words made me laugh he was correct in his place. We all come across things at some point in our life that required us to storm our brains to get out of that situation.
What is Brainstorming
Finding solutions to any particular problem through different creative ideas by an individual or a group is called brainstorming. Earlier a project was given to one person only, but assigning that project to other individuals gave an entirely different turn in the consequence. Then it was decided to engage a group of people in some projects can lead to an exceptional outcome. Involving conventional ideas doesn't always lead to the desired solution. Depending on an individual was something of the sort.
The term 'Brainstorming' was introduced by Alex F. Osborne who previously named it 'organised ideation' but later changed it to 'brainstorming sessions' in the year 1953
Ways of using this tool
1. 'Name' the PROBLEM
One should be aware of what one is looking for. So it's very important to know the question you want to answer. You must have heard the story of how the shoe came into existence. At first, the attempt was made to cover the whole path but finding it difficult and beyond one's capabilities they looked into the situation from a different angle and found that the objective could be achieved by covering one's feet also.
2. Group Discussion
The problem should be discussed openly with other members of the group. All ideas should be welcomed. One should always try to focus on finding solutions. All the group members should be appreciated for their participation. Being biased toward someone should be avoided.
3. Evaluation
After discussion, an evaluation should be done. It may take thousands of failed ideas to get an idea that could work for u, so one should never lose hope and keep moving forward.
The above-mentioned things are only for those who have to work in a group. But if you are an individual, you can take ideas from social media. Connecting with people who are working in the same field as you are, also leads to the answer to your questions.
